Why Average Investors Earn Below Average Market Returns

Investor Overreactions Cause Poor Historical Returns By Dana Anspach, About.com Guide

Dalbar Inc. is a company which studies investor behavior and analyzes investor market returns. The results of their research consistently show that the average investor earns below average returns.

For the twenty years ending 12/31/2008 the S&P 500 Index averaged 8.35% a year. A pretty attractive historical return. The average equity fund investor earned a market return of only 1.87%.

Why is this?

Investor Behavior Causes Poor Market Returns
Study after study shows when the stock market goes up, people pour money into equity mutual funds, and when the market goes down, they pull money out. During bear markets, they pull even more money out. They continuously buy high and sell low. They chase trends, focused on what is happening right now.

This irrational behavior causes their market returns to be substantially less than historical stock market returns.

What would cause investors to exhibit such poor judgment? After all, at an 8% return, their money would double every nine years. Rather than chasing performance, an investor could simply have bought a single index fund, and earned significantly higher returns.

The problem is the human reaction, to good news or to bad news, is to overreact. This emotional reaction causes illogical investment decisions. This tendency to overreact can become even greater during times of personal uncertainty; near retirement, for example.

4 Truths To Follow To Increase Your Market Returns

When it comes to your investments, if you feel your emotions are getting the best of you, come back to the following truths:
1. Do nothing. A conscious and thoughtful decision to do nothing is still a form of action.

2. Your money is like soap. To quote Gene Fama Jr., a famed economist, “Your money is like soap. The more you handle it, the less you’ll have.”

3. Never sell equities in a down market. If your funds are allocated correctly, you should never have a need to sell equities during a down market cycle. This holds true even if you are taking income. Just as you wouldn’t run out and put a for sale sign on your home when the housing market turns south, don’t be rash to sell equities when the stock market goes through a bear cycle. Wait it out.

4. Science works. It’s been academically proven that a disciplined approach to investing delivers higher market returns. Yeah, it’s boring; but it works.

负面频率很高的一个半小时

昨晚啊，我就陪了沈宗毅看‘僵尸先生’，真搞不懂他干嘛会爱看这些。。。
我好久没看这类的电影了，胆也缩了也，没有了‘免疫力’。。明知道这没什么，却从头怕到尾，一个半小时被负面频率包围着，让我深深明白被负面频率包围是多么的可怕啊！
看完后，我赶紧去掉负面频率，看看充满正面频率的书，哈哈，这让我好很多，也一觉睡到天亮。。^ ^

分手后的第七天

七天前，做了这个决定。收到他的回复时，还真的有失望，问自己，我这样做对了吗？

这一年多“在一起的日子里”很少，都是聚少离多，大概是距离让我们给隔着，每天思念的陪伴，让我也累了吧。

这一年多，总觉得恋爱后的自己，不一样了，有好的，也有坏的，好的，应该是有人爱着，感觉甜蜜幸福，不好的，应该是‘等’让我累了，也不能好好的一心一意做好自己。

这七天，不好过，因为总是“米修米修" 着他，他还好吗？然而，七天过了，真不该让自己这样不开心着了，现在要做的是，让自己快乐起来！珍惜当下的，做好自己，为自己未来统筹与行动！

我希望我们依然是朋友。我相信我们都能够找到更适合，更好的！祝福你我。。=）

I learned an interesting & easy rule, the Rule of 72, to get the estimation of how long an investment will double with a given rate of return, or with a target timeline, find out how much rate of return need to obtain.

A simple example:
Cymbeline bought a house for RM200K, and in 8 years time, the house's value increase to RM400K, what is the inflation rate?
Simple Answer: 72/8years= 9%

Christabel has RM60K, she wants to know when she can double her investment with the interest of 10%.
Simple Answer: 72/10= 7.2years

我们家的沈宗毅与沈宗亮也有话要对我们的妈咪说哦~

沈宗毅的 “我的妈妈 – 遗传篇”

看看我们的妈妈跟我们讲的话是不是大同小异的，

“毅，早一点睡啊！”
“毅，吃饭咯！”
“毅，不要出得太迟，记得锁车的门！”

这几年她加了一句，
“毅，我们去吃冷冷的。”

我是不曾记得还是忘记，

怎么小时候都没听过妈妈吵着要冰淇淋的？
哈哈～

而我，
当妈说我什么跟什么时，
我最常回她：“被你遗传的啊！”

看看我的遗传清单：
1，爱吃冷冷的
2，爱玩，顽皮
3，爱旅行
4，爱撒娇
5，懒惰
6，害羞
7，鸡婆
8，想太多
9，挑食
10，… 讲不完，因为陆陆续续还有更多”不好的”。

我妈当然没有这么容易罢休，
每次都会说：“能够赖，就赖啦哦！”
哈哈～

31年前，当我妈嫁入沈家，
她不再去旅行，只有看家；
她没到过电影院，只有看店。

这几年，
虽然她的年纪越来越大，
状态却是越来越年轻和青春。
她到处吃，
母亲节前夕还去吃麻辣火锅，
她能够跟你聊《叶问2》里的故事。
今年的圣诞节还会到新加波游玩呢。

对不起，
我遗漏了一个重点。
那就是我和这位世界上最年轻，最亲切，最善良，最可爱，最活泼，最美丽，最勤劳，最幽默，最风趣，最开朗，最… 的妈妈的对话背后的对话。(这也讲不完，因为陆陆续续还有更多”好的”)

刚刚说到

我们与我们的妈咪的美丽约会。去庆祝母亲节～

第一次带妈咪去吃麻辣火锅。在BDC的好友茶室（百家乐隔壁罢了）。

看，我们的紫色衫 ^^

我和我最爱的沈宗毅

忙着吃，所以只拍了三张食物的照片

第一次，吃麻辣火锅，第一口就被烫到。。刚开始吃觉得很辣，不过吃吃又觉得很爽，好吃！大家可以去试试～用点菜的方式，平均一个人不到二十块。我觉得这样很好，因为不会怕输，拼命在吃。哈哈～

因为时间真的很赶，匆匆用了半个小时，就把整锅给吃掉。真是有烫到，不过也蛮爽的啦。。。

接着，就去赶下一场，看8.45pm电影。

长到这样大，第一次带妈咪去看电影！这可是几经说服，妈咪才跟我们去看的。。
我们看了叶问2，超好看的！！喜欢！

常常有人说我跟我妈咪长得很像，我也这样觉得。以后我老了，大概就是这个样子吧～

我很爱我的妈咪，我的妈咪也很爱我。有她，我有满满的幸福～

她是一个好人。她真的是一个好人。她是百分百和蔼可亲的妈咪。

她常常说我小时候最皮了，被打最多次，每次带我出去，就像小狗被放生自由的样子，乱乱跑，哎哟，我的妈咪竟然把我形容成小狗，真的有这样皮吗，我都不记得了喔，只是从相片里真的可以找到我在乱乱跑的样子，挺可爱的嘛。哈哈～有空把它放上来，给大家看看。。

现在的我长大了，和妈咪最好了，因为我们都是属老鼠的 ^^

每天早上醒来，就给我最爱的妈咪一个拥抱，每天晚上都会和她说， mum, good night. 不时不时就给她一个亲亲，不时不时就和她说我爱她。她总会说，长这么大了，还这样幼稚。我才不管呢，我就是喜欢这样，可以看到她不好意思的，却又甜甜的微笑。

爱，就要大声说出来的嘛！

我要我的妈咪永远快乐，健康，永远疼我。

妈，我爱你，母亲节快乐！也祝所有的妈妈们，母亲节快乐，做妈妈真的不容易哦，你们都很厉害，辛苦了 ^^

古晋人最爱古晋的哪里？

我个人最爱古晋的角落是老巴刹的前长途巴士的终点站边的一条巷子，
它是我认为最有文化的一条街，有多少的人从那里出发，越走越远。
而它，没了。
现在，我最爱古晋的哪里呢?
是甘蜜街的印度店，卖着咖哩粉的那几间杂货店。

上个星期的某一天，
我带着相机去一趟甘蜜街拍照，
我经过那几间的印度店，我好想拍咖哩粉。
可是，我害怕，害怕被人像赶狗一样赶我走，“去，去，去！”

我在MSN告诉二姐我的感觉，
她大概是这样回答我的，还要我重复她说的。
她是这么说的（马来文版）
Kamu pergi sana, cakap dengan tauke, “emak saya mahu beli kari serbuk, tapi saya tak tahu apa kari serbuk, oleh itu, saya ambil gambar, nanti saya balik rumah, tunjuk saya punya emak, baru saya balik beli lagi~

就跑去前方拍，她继续假假看东西，我努力地找美丽的角度。

当我查看时，发现图片拍得很差，很模糊。
可是，如果问我我最爱这么多张照片里的哪张，这一天拍的是我很喜欢很喜欢的，只因为它有故事，一个温馨咖哩粉的故事。
之后，姐姐还说如果店员问你在干嘛，就回答他
“妈妈叫你来买东西，可是我不知道她要买什么，所以我来拍给我妈看，
看看她到底要什么，之后才回来买。”
哈哈～

就在隔天给我找到了，是跌在一个朋友的包包里，很奇怪，想不透。

Shuan's menu of the day --- rice roll 糯米卷

这是我中学时期的作品，因为发明者正是阿萱我本人啦。也好几年没做了，应该是懒惰在作怪吧～哈哈!

其实很简单，就是：

1. 准备材料：糯米，花生，虾米，鸡肉，香菇，蒜头，洋葱，豆腐皮

2. 糯米和花生要先浸几小时，把虾米，鸡肉，香菇，蒜头和洋葱切小

3. 先炒蒜头，洋葱，然后，放香菇，虾米，花生，糯米，放点水，盐，鱼露和胡椒粉，炒至糯米五分熟。放凉。

4. 等至凉后，用豆腐皮包成一条条的，再用蒸的，把它给蒸熟。

5. 然后呢，可以用煎的，把它弄成更好吃～

味道就是。。　好吃！

早餐就来一个沙巴生肉面吧！挺特别的，也真的挺好吃的！

嗯，感觉挺不好意思的，因为我这里好像常常有不halal的东西。。那我就写中文好了，我的马来朋友们应该不会看懂吧！哈哈！

Menu of the day - Laksa

my first homecook laksa ^^

My menu of the day --- LAKSA!

The recipe is...
1. Stir-fry the laksa paste in wok, add in water, coconut santan, prawn head, chicken bones and cook for half hour.
2. Then filter it, add in salt and ajinomoto to taste
3. Soften bee-hoon with boiling water;
4. Cook the necessary amount of bean sprouts, prawns in boiling water;
5. Cook the chicken in boiling water and slide thinly
6. Fry the egg and cut thinly
7. To one bowl of bee-hoon can be added slides of chicken, prawns, eggs, bean sprouts, and then pour in the laksa solution previously cooked.

How it taste? Hmm, i think i have poured too much water, so, the taste is not thick enough, and it's like short of some taste, and quite doubt about the recipe given on laksa paste packet, cos i have put the whole packet of the paste, with the half portion of water as instructed, so it cannot be the taste not thick enough @.@ Nevermind, this is my first trial, a good start, and maybe try other laksa paste next time~ ^^

And i feel great that "I MAKE IT HAPPEN". Cheers~ ^^

所以，在美丽的星期六，就出发咯！哇，我有很棒很棒的午餐，有很好吃的鱼丸汤，哥罗面，和沙爹！真有满满的满足感！太棒了！！

Recently, I think I had taken five times laksa within a month, oh my goodness, this never happen to me in the past. Hmm, i think i have fall in love to yummy laksa.. hahaha..

Obviously, i have reduced the frequency of kolo mee. Why? because my dearest lian lian is not with me, so i have no body to accompany me to eat. Only i realise, lian lian and myself are the only fans of kolomee in my house.. Lian lian, yi ka che is waiting for you to come back and have a kolo mee feast with me!! yeah, three more months to go... haha.. :D

       女孩喜欢上了男人，对他很好，是很好的那种。她给他洗衣服，收拾房间，早晨买早点给他，小鸟依人的靠在男人身边。男人觉得有人这样无微不至的照顾是件很惬意的事情，于是他们顺理成章地在一起。男人习惯有女孩在身边的日子，可后来，女孩就离开了，是当男人在睡梦中的时候。      男人讲完之后一脸茫然的问我：“你说，我哪里做错了！我给她钱买化妆品，有人欺负她，我把那人揍了个半死，我这么爱她，她为什么就走了呢？”
       我安静的听完，没办法给这个疑惑的男人一个满意的答案。我们从咖啡店走出来，过马路时男人瞅一个空挡便快步跑到对面向车流这边的我招手催我过去。我有些无奈的笑了。
       我问男人是不是不愿意牵女孩的手。他说在家抱抱可以，在外面多不好意思啊。我说他过马路时一定比女孩快，他点头说你怎么知道？我说女孩在刷碗扫地的时候，他一定是悠闲的看着电视。男人摸着头说自己似乎明白了。我说，如果明白了就去挽回吧。
       希望男人是真的明白了。
       其实很多女人外表很坚强，内心却还是柔弱，需要男人呵护的。她不在乎你给了她多钱，却会永远记得你调皮的从路边花坛偷回的那朵放到她手中的月季花。她在厨房忙碌的时候，你从身后送来的一个吻会让她觉得幸福甜蜜。你们过马路时候，在左边的你紧紧握住她的手，不论是什么年纪，都会让她觉得安全。
       世界上女人很多，美丽的、温柔的、聪明的、可爱的……可无论什么类型的女人，期待幸福的心情都是一样的。所以她们等待着一个男人的出现，等着这个男人对她们好。
       其实女人期待的对自己好，是件很简单的事情。
       她只希望自己的男人不要因为忙碌而忘记她的生日。想听他在耳边轻声说句“快乐吧，我的宝贝。”这时玫瑰也可以省略。她只希望做家务累的时候，他轻轻抚摩自己的额头说声“宝贝，喝了牛奶再睡吧。”即使对于家务男人一窍不通。她只希望害怕或者孤单的时候，男人在身边搂着她的肩膀坚定地对她说“别怕，有我。”
       是的，有的时候，爱意是在不经意间流露的。可能男人你自己没感觉，可是女人却字一句地记在了心底。她们会用更多的爱恋回报你。
       尝试着在出门之前吻一下你的女人。常常温存的告诉她，你有多么的爱她。休息的时候抢过她手里要洗的衣物。天气好的时候带她到公园散步。睡觉前给她讲讲公司里，回家路上看到的有趣的事情。偶尔耐心倾听女人讲的事情，即使你对白菜5角或是4角一斤不感兴趣。在她穿了新裙子的时候，认真的看2分钟，然后诚心夸奖一下她。如果裙子大了，就说你又苗条了，如果裙子小了，就说如果大一点会更漂亮。逛街的时候可以拉着女人的手或者揽着她的肩膀，因为这样，她会觉得幸福。女人都希望在平凡中被呵护，被爱着。你温存的点点滴滴一定能让她闻到幸福的芳香。其实女人要的幸福很简单。你要耐心的对你的女人好，不需要如火山火热，也不需要如海浪汹涌，细水长流就足够让她幸福一辈子。
       一个黄昏，我接到那个男人的电话。他很兴奋地告诉我，说女孩又回到了他身边。我问他是怎么做的，他说费了很大力气才约到女孩散步，还专挑路口走。过马路时候站在女孩左边，紧紧握住她的手。我笑了，说你现在明白了吧。男人嘿嘿的说：“明白了，明白了，她跟我，是需要我疼的。”
       是啊，当上帝用亚当的肋骨造了一个夏娃时，就预示着男人该认真照顾身边那个是自己身上肋骨变的女子，好好爱她吧，否则你自己的胸口也是会疼痛的。
       女人，是用来疼的！！

真的，女人要的幸福很简单，只要多疼一些，多体贴一些就好！

这让我想起我曾经的一位好好的男生朋友，每次出去，他总要比我先到，如果我先到，他就会问，你干麻这么快，刚刚你不是还在家吗？，你不是明明约好几点的吗，干麻你比我先到。每次他总是要载我，我都很“大女人”的说，不要，我自己会驾车！哈哈，他也拿我没办法！这份体贴，我都有被感动到! 也希望，他已经找到自己的幸福！

I have a very hot, wonderful, funs, colorful and cherish sunday with my best girl friends, carolyne, siaw yung & siew fang at orchid garden.

We start our day journey with a great breakfast - Laksa at Golden Arch Kopitiam. This is my first time tried the famous laksa there, it tastes more coconut juice and may not hot enough for those who likes spicy laksa and this reminded me of the laksa i tried in singapore. I like it! ^^

Next, we depart to our destination, Orchid Garden, which is just reopened on 5 March. And it's easy to find as it is just on the way to our new DUN (which is very near to wisma bapa & old DUN). Wow wow wow, there have alots of very beautiful, unique and colorful orchids.. And of course, we enjoy these precious moments by capturing alots of our four girl friends photos.. here we go...

The photos are so pretty, right? haha.. I love all of them so much.. It's really great to bring the tripod along, because we can enjoy taking group photos without trouble to ask help from others.. ^^v

When is our next trip? It's 21 March 2010 to damai beach and this time our pretty siaw lin will join us~ Woohoooo~~ (●*∩_∩*●)

Menu of the day - Potato salad

this is special menu of the day --- POTATO SALAD.

Potatoes
1. boil the potatoes as much as you want until it's cooked
2. use fork and poke the potatoes to check if it's cooked
3. peel off the cooked potatoes skin and cut into cubes according to the size you wish
4. mix a small portion of butter to the hot cubes of potatoes
5. fry some bacon / ham / hotdog till crispy

Salad sauce
1. salad cream or mayonaise mixed with a small portion of condensed milk (evaporated filled milk)
2. add some pepper and salt to your taste and stir well

Now mix the potatoes and salad sauce and it is ready to serve. Happy cooking ^^

December 2002, I joined Inti College Sarawak
September 2004, I completed my diploma in commerce in Inti College Sarawak
March 2005, I attended the graduation ceremony
Since then, I didn’t step into this college for almost five years.
26 February 2010, once again, I am back to this college, as a volunteer for a charity event.
All the school time memories are returned, the building, mary yek hall, library, lobby are so familiar and I miss my fellow classmates, friends and lecturers. I feel like everything is fresh and just like happened yesterday. I miss my school time~

A special, meaningful & precious night being a volunteer for the Kiwanis's singing competition. This is first time i got a chance to know Kiwanis international club 國際同濟基金會 and join them for this great charity event.

The name "Kiwanis" stems from an American Indian phrase which, roughly translated, means "to express one's self". The Motto of Kiwanis is : "Serving the Children of the World".

Big and special thanks to Patrick and Nancy for inviting me and giving me this good opportunity to contribute a small help in charity works and thank you very much to Carol, my dearest friend for joining me in this event and lastly great to meet new friends, Wendy, Tracy, Jasmine, Wenderine and etc.

this is my favorite homecook crispy tomato mee, it tasted special and different from the one we got from outside.. yeah, yummy~ i am loving it~ so, i am here write down the recipe for my easy reference in future.. :p

the ingredients and steps are in sequence...
kolomee (fried till turn to golden color)
garlic, onion, chili, fish ball, meat ball, chicken, prawn, tomato sauce, water, plum, sugar, salt, vege.

这个大姐姐真是想了好久，才想到去北市的喵喵博物馆，相信他们应该会喜欢吧，尤其是两个小甜心秀秀和鸿祥。哈哈，真的，他们到那就跑上跑下，还好有乖乖的秀娟，帅帅的佳鸿 & 佳发帮忙，不过，也真得很开心！原本还想带他们到图书馆边的小湖走走，结果一场大雨，把计划给毁了，真气人！

希望大家都有开心到，sweeties，明年我们再聚咯！

这一夜，我和我好久好久没见面的朋友，巧儿，雅琪和绣琪来乐亭吃拉面～我个人觉得这里的拉面还不错，因为古晋也蛮少好吃的日式餐厅，我最爱的是ten ichi 了，好可惜上次去，刚好相机没电，真气人！～

我想，已有好多好多年没见到巧儿和雅琪了，她们给我的感觉是，她们还是一样可爱，纯真，率直，感觉昨天我们才从学校毕业，也感觉年轻了，哈哈～

其实，是不是有些时候，有些事没有变，而在变的是我们，把事情想多了～我想，简单，应该会更好吧！=）

祝福我们，永远年轻，快乐～有空要多聚聚哦～

a saturday, a movie day, a woohoo day :D yes, dear carol & shuan watch 大日子woohoo together. Woohoo is a funny and touch story, especially ah-beng, he is really so "ah-beng", ah-rain who are girlish is very potential in comedy and ah-huat with at last no more "sui bian"~ hahaha.. although the story is simple but the message it brings is, "not everything are measured by money, but also love, family, culture & self-achievement" and i like the scene too, a beautiful & simple seaside, rural life.. i can say this is a worth local cny movie to support~ hope to see more nice local movies in future~ cheers~ =)

This is another cookies day! Today i have made cornflakes cookies, which is easy & fast~ =)

here are the recipe:
ingredients:
1. kellogg's cornflakes 1 box (325g)
2, icing sugar 3oz (or 80g)
3. honey 2 1/2 tablespoons
4. salted butter 125g
5. paper cups

steps:
1. melt the sugar, honey and butter
2. add cornflakes and mix well
3. place the mixed cornflakes into paper cups
4. bake in oven for 10mins (180degree)
5. ready to serve
This is an "easy-to-make" cookies which taste yummy~ So, please do a try because never try, you will never know~ =) happy baking ^^v

woohoo~ chinese new year is just two weeks from now.. it's about the time for me to learn baking again.. wahaha, i have not bake for almost one year since this year cny for my butter cakes.. :p

today, my "assignment" is to bake two cookies, pineapple cookies & kuih momoo (both mum & sister favorite)..

pineapple roll cookies' recipe:

ingredients:

1. 250g butter

2. 60g icing sugar (or 2oz)

3. 270g flour (or 9oz)

4. 100g corn flour (or 3oz)

5. 2 tablespoons of milk powder

6. abit salt

7. 1 egg

8. ready made pineapple jam

steps:

1. beat butter & sugar till fluffy

2. put in egg, stir well

3. add in flours (no. 3 to no. 6), mix well by hand till it becomes firm and non-stick dough (p/s: may add some flour or corn flour if it's too watery) - do not mix too long and too hard...

4. put mixture into the mould, press out into strips, put in jam and roll it softly

5. bake in preheated oven at 180c, for 10 mins, take out and put some egg yolk on its topping, and bake for another 10-15mins (estimated) or till it turns to golden brown

6. here the yummy pineapple cookies are ready to serve... =)

for kuih momoo, the ingredients and methods are the same, just the shape is round, without jam and mix with icing sugar after it's baked~

i feel great and fun~ because i learned new things and it tastes yummy~ a big thank you to my dearest aunties for everything... =)

hmm.. is this our first time (yih & shuan) to bring mum to eat in "restaurant"?? i can't remember i did bring her before this, i mean not chinese food, because i always want her to try new stuff, like western food, japanese food, but i guess this is first time to " chinese restaurant"... we ordered three dishes, thai style bidin, homemade tofu and pork leg with man tou (mum's favor ^^)... though it's just three dishes, but really make us so full... and i am happy to bring mum.. mum, i promise to bring you to try more nicer foods next time.. opps, talk about food make me hungry again.. wahaha.. i miss peking duck at li garden, should bring them to try =) and it's would be so much funs if lian lian is here too.. =)
